    Proposal of a dynamic performance index to analyze driving pattern effect on car emissions

    The contributions of driver behaviour as well as surrounding infrastructure are decisive on pollutant emissions from vehicles in real traffic situations. This article deals with the preliminary study of the interaction between the dynamic variables recorded in a vehicle (driving pattern) and pollutant emissions produced over a given urban route. It has been established a “dynamic performance index”-DPI, which is calculated from some driving pattern parameters, which in turn depends on traffic congestion level and route characteristics, in order to determine whether the driving has been aggressive, normal or calm. Two passenger cars instrumented with a portable activity measurement system -to record dynamic variables- and on-board emission measurement equipment have been used.     Se presentan los resultados experimentales de un estudio realizado en el Laboratorio de Motores Térmicos de la ETSII de la UPM para evaluar el impacto en eficiencia energética y medioambiental de la tecnología Stop/Start en vehículos todoterreno con motor diesel, en condiciones de tráfico real urbano. Se realizaron ensayos urbanos con vehículos Land Rover Freelander2 en la zona central de la ciudad de Madrid midiendo la emisión instantánea de CO2 y de CO con equipos de medida de emisiones embarcados, y el consumo de combustible se calculó a partir del “balance de carbonos” midiendo el caudal de gases de escape mediante un caudalímetro de desarrollo propio. Se utilizaron dos vehículos todoterreno con motor diesel semejante, ambos cumpliendo los mismos límites Euro 4 para vehículos ligeros, uno convencional y otro adaptado con sistema Stop/Start. Se obtuvieron curvas de tendencia de consumo de combustible y de emisión de CO2 con la velocidad media, que demuestran el significativo efecto de mejora en la eficiencia energética de la versión de motor adaptado con sistema Stop/Start

    Effect of event-based sensing on IoT node power efficiency. Case study: air quality monitoring in smart cities

    The predicted growth of urban populations has prompted researchers and administrations to improve services provided to citizens. At the heart of these services are wireless networks of multiple different sensors supported by the Internet of Things. The main purpose of these networks is to provide sufficient information to achieve more intelligent transport, energy supplies, social services, public environments (indoor and outdoor) and security, etc. Two major technological advances would improve such networks in Smart Cities: efficient communication between nodes and a reduction in each node's power consumption. The present paper analyses how event-based sampling techniques can address both challenges. We describe the fundamentals of the triggering mechanisms that characterise Send-on-Delta, Send-on-Area, Send-on-Energy and Send-on-Prediction techniques to restrict the number of transmissions between the sensor node and the supervision or monitoring node without degrading tracking of the sensed variable. At the same time, these aperiodic techniques reduce consumption by sensor node electronic devices. In order to quantify the energy savings, we evaluate the increase achieved in the average lifetime of sensor node batteries. The data provided by Smart City tools in the city of Santander (Spain) were selected to conduct a case study of the main pollutants that determine city air quality: SO2 , NO2 , O3 and PM10 . We conclude that event-based sensing techniques can yield up to 50% savings in sensor node consumption compared to classical periodic sensing techniques

    Lyapunov Self-triggered Controller for Nonlinear Trajectory Tracking of Unicycle-type Robot

    This paper focuses on the design and implementation of an aperiodic control of nonholonomic robots tracking nonlinear trajectories. The main objective of our controller is to reduce the number of updates while preserving control performance guarantees. To solve the problem in a more efficient way, we design two aperiodic control solutions, one to reach a target point and a second to track a predefined nonlinear trajectory. Unlike most previous work, our triggering condition only updates the controller when the time derivative of the Lyapunov function becomes nonnegative, without taking into account the measurement error. Multiple simulated results with different initial conditions are included, showing how our control solution significantly reduces the need for communication in comparison with periodic and other aperiodic strategies while preserving a desired tracking performance. To validate the proposal experimental tests of each control technique with a P3-DX robot remotely controlled through an IEEE 802.11g wireless network are also carried out

    Dynamic Adjustment of Measurement Noise Covariance Matrix in an Infrared-based Positioning and Tracking System

    2022 IEEE 12th International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN), 5-8 September, 2022, Beijing, China.The accuracy of optical positioning systems can be compromised by multiple factors (reflections, calibration, etc.). As an alternative to the triangulation, multilateration, or fingerprinting techniques typically used in these systems, stochastic estimation techniques can be used, such as Kalman Filters (KF) in its different variants. They estimate the receiver position based on the acquired measurements and the estimated positions in previous iterations. This work presents the evaluation of a 3D optical positioning system, based on four LED beacons and a quadrant receiver, using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The implementation of a measurement noise covariance matrix that is adjusted depending on the angle and distance between transmitters and receiver, obtained in the previous iteration, is analysed. The receiver position estimation using both a dynamic and a static measurement noise covariance matrix is evaluated and compared with simulations and experimental tests. In simulations, the achieved errors are below 6 cm and 12 cm in 75% of the cases when using a dynamic and a static noise matrix, respectively. In the experimental tests, the obtained errors in 75% of the cases for the position in plane XY and the rotation angle ? are smaller than 7.44 cm and 1.06 ? with a dynamic noise matrix; and below 7.59 cm and 1.62 ? for a static one.Agencia Estatal de InvestigaciónUniversidad de Alcal

    Self-Triggered Formation Control of Nonholonomic Robots

    In this paper, we report the design of an aperiodic remote formation controller applied to nonholonomic robots tracking nonlinear, trajectories using an external positioning sensor network. Our main objective is to reduce wireless communication with external sensors and robots while guaranteeing formation stability. Unlike most previous work in the field of aperiodic control, we design a self-triggered controller that only updates the control signal according to the variation of a Lyapunov function, without taking the measurement error into account. The controller is responsible for scheduling measurement requests to the sensor network and for computing and sending control signals to the robots. We design two triggering mechanisms: centralized, taking into account the formation state and decentralized, considering the individual state of each unit. We present a statistical analysis of simulation results, showing that our control solution significantly reduces the need for communication in comparison with periodic implementations, while preserving the desired tracking performance. To validate the proposal, we also perform experimental tests with robots remotely controlled by a mini PC through an IEEE 802.11g wireless network, in which robots pose is detected by a set of camera sensors connected to the same wireless network

    ALCOR Project: Contributions to Optimizing Remote Robot Guidance in Intelligent Spaces

    The work shows the sensory, communication and control solutions for the remote guidance of robots in intelligent environments, as derived activity from the ALCOR project. In this type of applications, optimizing shared resources, especially those related to energy autonomy and the use of the wireless channel, remains a challenge. The main contributions of the project are: a) development of sensorial units based on infrared with centimeter accuracy in the location of the source and response times of milliseconds; b) wireless communication solutions that improve the information routing and homogenization in network traffic; and c) control and estimation solutions based on events with independent mechanisms of action on the mobile unit and request for measurements to the sensor module.     Remote control of a robotic unit: a case study for control engineering formation

    Hands-on experimentation has widely demonstrated its efficacy in engineering training, especially in control formation, since experimentation using computer-aided control system design (CACSD) tools is essential for future engineers. In this context, this article describes a case study for Control Engineering formation, based on a new lab practice for the linear and angular velocity control for a commercial P3-DX robot platform, to teach industrial control. This lab proposal includes all the stages involved in the design of a real control system, from plant identification from an open-loop test to real experimentation of the designed control system. The lab practices proposed have a twofold objective: First, it is an interdisciplinary approach that allows students to put into practice the skills from other subjects in the curriculum, facilitating the integration of knowledge. In addition, it allows increasing the motivation of the students by working with a complex and realistic plant. The proposal has been evaluated through the grades of the students, as well as the perception of both students and instructors, and the results obtained allow to confirm the benefits of the proposal.Universidad de Alcal

    Influence of driving style on fuel consumption and Emissions in diesel-powered passenger car

    This paper presents the main results of a study on the influence of driving style on fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of diesel passenger car in urban traffic. Driving styles (eco, normal or aggressive) patterns were based on the “eco-driving” criteria. The methodology is based on on-board emission measurements in real urban traffic in the city of Madrid. Five diesel passenger cars, have been tested. Through a statistical analysis, a Dynamic Performance Index was defined for diesel passenger cars. Likewise, the CO, NOX and HC emissions were compared for each driving style for the tested vehicles. Eco-driving reduces by 14% fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but aggressive driving increase consumption by 40%. Aggressive driving increases NOX emission by more than 40%. CO and HC, show different trends, but being increased in eco-driving style

    Infrared Sensor System for Mobile-Robot Positioning in Intelligent Spaces

    The aim of this work was to position a Mobile Robot in an Intelligent Space, and this paper presents a sensorial system for measuring differential phase-shifts in a sinusoidally modulated infrared signal transmitted from the robot. Differential distances were obtained from these phase-shifts, and the position of the robot was estimated by hyperbolic trilateration. Due to the extremely severe trade-off between SNR, angle (coverage) and real-time response, a very accurate design and device selection was required to achieve good precision with wide coverage and acceptable robot speed. An I/Q demodulator was used to measure phases with one-stage synchronous demodulation to DC. A complete set of results from real measurements, both for distance and position estimations, is provided to demonstrate the validity of the system proposed, comparing it with other similar indoor positioning systems
